EMBEDDED NETWORK SERVICES FOR 5G EXPERIENCES (5G ESSENCE)

A real-life use case that will be deployed to demonstrate the importance of 5G ESSENCE for the realization of the 5G ecosystem

Deployment of 5G technologies should lead to new solutions and services that will be able to offer higher transmission rates and performances, low latency and significantly better coverage. Following these guidelines, the aim of the project 5G ESSENCE is to provide the innovative and flexible solutions in the provision of end-to-end network and cloud infrastructure slices over the same physical infrastructure, capable to fulfill vertical-specific requirements as well as mobile broadband services. Project framework is based on knowledge, software modules and prototypes achieved in the 5G-PPP projects of Phase 1.

 

Objectives of the 5G ESSENCE project (official scope)

 

5G ESSENCE is an Innovative Project seeking to boot the paradigms of Edge Cloud computing and Small Cell as-a-Service (SCaaS) by fuelling the drivers and removing the barriers in the Small Cell (SC) market, forecasted to grow at an impressive pace up to 2020 and beyond and to play a “key role” in the 5G ecosystem.

5G ESSENCE will provide a highly flexible and scalable platform, able to support new business models and revenue streams by creating a neutral host market and reducing operational costs, by providing new opportunities for ownership deployment, operation, and amortization.

One of 5G ESSENCE major innovations is the provision of E2E network and cloud infrastructure slices over the same physical infrastructure so that to fulfill vertical-specific requirements as well as mobile broadband services, in parallel.

  • Full specification of critical architectural enhancements.
  • Definition of the baseline system architecture and interfaces for the provisioning of a cloud-integrated multi-tenant Smal Cell network and a programmable radio resources management (RRM) controller.
  • Development of the centralized software-defined radio access network (SD-RAN) controller to program the radio resources usage in a unified way for all CESCs (Cloud-Enabled Small Cells) Development of orchestrator’s enhancements for the distributed service management.

Since June 2017, Smart Mobile Labs has been involved in the realization of the project 5G Essence – Embedded Network Services for 5G Experiences. The project receives public funding from the European Commission within the funding programme “Horizon 2020”.

In the scope of the project, Smart Mobile Labs is responsible for the tasks concerning the use case “5G Edge Network Acceleration in a Stadium”. This use case will demonstrate the 5G based video production and video distribution, e.g. multicast video delivery, offering spectators an enriched event experience. Prototype validations are planned for 2019 at a large-scale facility, the municipal football stadium of the Egaleo town (Athens area).
