As part of CampusOS, our aim is to establish a technologically independent modular campus network ecosystem in Germany. Our focus is on open and secure wireless networks. Together with our research partners, we are developing new open and modular 5G campus network architectures.

A campus network is a private network operated within a limited geographical area. It enables reliable and secure communication between various devices, applications, and users within the campus. In contrast to Wi-Fi, campus networks often cover larger geographical areas and can encompass multiple locations.
We recognize significant benefits of a 5G campus network, such as minimal latency for real-time transmissions and overall data transfer improvements. Therefore, we are adopting the Open RAN approach, which provides open interfaces in the network to seamlessly integrate external components into the overall network. Our goal is to transform closed systems into open systems.
To carry out the project, we provide testbeds with representative use cases to conduct functional tests and evaluate performance. Additionally, the project involves research and development efforts related to interoperability, security, network orchestration, and management.
The campus network is realized based on an expandable technology toolbox, which includes a component catalog and blueprints for various operator models, as well as functional combinations of components.
At SML, our task involves developing user-oriented operator models for campus networks. We design models and technical methods for small and nomadic campus networks. Furthermore, we develop and integrate specific low-latency network and data services in the 5G environment. Our focus lies on efficient distribution and processing of network and data services, running directly within the CampusOS OpenRAN infrastructure or the edge cloud.
